A Beginners Guide To Cross Processing
Over here at The Celluloid Collective we thrive on experimentation, and few techniques embody this spirit better than cross-processing. This could be slide film developed as black and white, E6 in C-41 or developing our ECN-2 film in C-41 chemicals, a process that is highly frowned upon by some, but it does lead to unexpected and beautiful results if your up for it. Setting the technical aside, cross-processing is about embracing imperfection—letting go of control. See what happens. In this article, we’re going to explore why you might want to consider cross-processing our ECN-2 film. Maybe the creative potential of imperfection will be what your storytelling needs.
Why Cross-Process?
If you’re new to film photography, cross-processing might sound complex, but in it’s simplest terms we are just using different chemicals than a film was originally designed for. Sometimes, this is for practical reasons. Some older films can no longer be developed in their original chemicals due to limited availability or accessibility. In such cases, you might turn to black-and-white development or in this case you use C-41 chemicals to develop the film in color.
When you do this for the first time it does feel strange. Why mess with something that works? As you continue along you will see that cross-processing becomes a way to explore and experiment. It also allows us to preserve otherwise obsolete film. By adapting, you unlock a realm of creative possibilities, transforming potential limitations into opportunities for artistic expression.
The Beauty of Imperfect Colors
One of the most captivating aspects of cross-processing is its unpredictability. If you are looking for the optimal results then you should definitely stick with ECN-2 chemicals. But, if you want to explore then you should definitely swap out for C-41. Some of the by-products of the process can be shifts in color balance, increased contrast, or even streaks and tints that seem to come from nowhere. This unpredictability might feel intimidating, but it’s also what makes the process so exciting. What will the final result be?
Embracing the Unpredictable
We are not going to lie to you, cross-processing ECN-2 film in C-41 chemicals invites you to embrace the unknown. Each roll surprises you, and, that makes it so rewarding. This kind of unpredictability is an excellent way to break free from perfectionism and focus on the joy of discovery.
The results remind us that photography is as much about experimentation as it is about technique. It’s just film, don’t take it so serious. Have fun, remove your remjet and enjoy the journey.
